If you have watched some of my other videos you have noticed I sometimes use common objects in an artistic way. I do this because many types of art are far removed from the average person. Creating art with things people come in contact with in their daily lives closes that gap. So the idea for this piece came from...what else...eating cheetos. My fingers turned orange and I noticed it created an accidental mark on my clothes. From there my thoughts went to fabric as a surface....poof...it made me think of velvet paintings. The Virgin of Guadalupe, Unicorns, and probably the most famous incarnation of velvet painting. The Velvet Elvis. It's kitsch. It's cheesy. Thus a Velvet Elvis painted with cheese puffs.

On July 2, 1956, Elvis went into RCA's NYC studios to record "Hound Dog." It was the first song on which the vocal talents of the Jordanaires were used. Take #31 was selected by RCA for release. "Hound Dog" had a 28-week stay on Billboard's Top 100 chart, peaking at #2 for three weeks. The Platters' "My Prayer" and then Elvis' "Don't Be Cruel" kept "Hound Dog" from the top spot. The song was number one for three weeks on the Country Juke Box chart and number one for one week on the rhythm & blues chart. Sales in 1956 alone exceeded six million copies. This is the picture disc issue of "A Legendary Performer Vol. 3" from the 1970's, featuring the original mono release of "Hound Dog."

Elvis Presley Are You Lonesome Tonight? Written by Roy Turk and Lou Handman in 1926. Elvis recorded it April 4, 1960 at RCA Nashville studios, reportedly at the request of Colonel Parker. It entered Billboards Hot 100 chart at #35; it was #2 in the second week, the biggest one week jump within the Top 40 history. It stayed #1 for six weeks. It reached #22 on the country chart and #3 on the rhythm & blues chart. In England, it was #1 for four weeks. Worldwide sales have been estimated at over 4000000 copies. It was the A-side to I Gotta Know. Elvis received three Grammy Award nominations for the song, Record of the Year, Best Vocal Performance, Male, and Best Performance by a Pop Singles Artist, but it didnt win one. Winehouse, who was released with a caution on a separate charge for assault less than two weeks ago, was being held at a London police station after she turned herself in. Madonna's in a familiar position this week as her new album "Hard Candy" debut at No. 1 on the US album charts. It is the artist's seventh chart-topper, the second-most among female artists -- only Barbra Streisand, with eight, has more. As a result, Mariah Carey's "E=MC2" was dethroned to No. 2 after two weeks on top. Britney Spears, whose good behavior just earned her more visitation with her kids, was seen making a visit to a Hollywood recording studio soon after the good news was announced. The singer has been making progress in restoring order to her personal and business life.
